Tho Rangataua Axemen's Association

intend to make their carnival at Easter, ono of considerable magnitude. There is a proposal to hold a two days' meeting. Many valuable trophies havo been received, including one each from Mr. ; D. Neagl6 and Mr. Ellis Robinson, Tai- ; hape. From Ist January a rural delivery of correspondence will take place r,tWeen Taihapo and Ngawaka, taking the route of Mataroa Road outward and back by Moawhango Road. The delivery will ]>o tri-weekly, and should prove a boon co the settlers. Tho residents of Hunterville intend to tender Mr. P. F. Hockley a farewell banquet on the occasion of his departure from tho district; also to make .1 presentation to him. Mr. Hockley is popular with all people who have come into contact with him, and in Taihapo, although tho majority are of a different political colour, he is personally very popular, and much admired for his genial disposition and the sporting manner in which ho has taken defeat at the various elections. Tho deviation round tho Horopito slip is still blocked to tho large ninetyton engines, and tho expresses have, in consequence, to be drawii over this portion'of the line by smaller engines." If all e;oes well it is expected normal conditions will prevail about the beo-innm^ or next week. The employees of Mr. Geo. Syme, sawmiller, met in the Public Hall, Tangiwai. on Friday last, the occasion being the farewelling of Mr. and Mrs Alex. Collie. Mr. Collie, who has beon locomotive and engine-driver for Mr. Syme for the past ten years, has taken over a photographic business in Ohakune.( After songs and games had been indulged in, a, sumptuous supper was served by Mrs. Blezzard and other ladies. At the conclusion of the stinncr Mr. E. Goudy, acting as chairman" of the evening, introduced the object for which they had all met together, viz.. to do honour to their friends Mr. and Mrs. Collie. He called upon Mr. W. B. Blezzard, the works manager, to oresent to Mr. and Mrs. Collie a handsome silver tea service and tray, which had been subscribed for by his fellow-work-men. Mr. W. Towns acting as secretary to the movement. Mr. Blezzard, in making tho presentation on behalf of the donors, feelingly referred to tho derjp.rture. of Mr. and Mrs. Collie from tho mill, and voiced the general opinion that the guests would be greatly missed from this district. On behalf of those present he wished Mr. and Mrs. Collio every success in their new undertaking. Tho silver service bore the following engraving: "Presented to Mr. and Mrs. Alex Collie on their departure from Tangiwai, by their friends, 11, 10, 12." Mr. Collie, on behalf of himself and his wife, thanked Mr. Blezzard for nis kind remarks, and the donors for their handsome present, and the kindly sentiment which prompted tho gift. It would always remind them of the pleasant days spent amongst them. Mi*. Symo also made kindly reference to Mrs. Collie's severance from the mill. After tho presentation dancing was indulged in. Songs were rendered during the evening by Mrs. Towns, Miss Norton, Masters William and David Syme, Mr. Clinch, and others. Miss Syme acted aa pianist, and Mr. Geo. Hobbs as M.C. An enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne," and "He's a jolly good fellow." Mr. E. Hayes, a former resident of Taihape, but now of Cambridge, paid a short visit to this town during the week. Mr. W. Kelsall. of tho Rangitikei Sawmillers' official staff, leaves on holiday at the end of this week for Aiickland. whero ho will be married to an Auckland lady. Mr. G. Bowles, Locomotive Inspector of Railwava. who has been on relieving duties at Taihapn for the past month, left for Auckland .1 few days ago. Mr. H. Beattio loft on Monday for Napier. where he will take up permanent residence and work. Mr. Were, manager of the Bank of New Zealand. Mangaweka. has left with his wife and fami'" on a holiday trip to Australia.
