MARTON FARM SCHOOL.
A BATTLE WITH WEEDS
(By Our Travelling Correspondent.) MAUTO-N, October 23. ■Operations at the Marton Farm School, us inducted a day or two ago, have been principally confinsd to the planting of potatoes, but it appears that owing to the continued wet weather and that the planting had to be pushed alii-ad on tiio only day in the week available, weeds —principally sorrell ,and docks—gained th:e mastery. An heroic battle has been engaged in and now the instructors; are obliged to do a great deal of manual labour themselves in order to eradicate the weeds. It was quite a treat to see JVlr Banner driving his te-am of three, and .as the horses employed had just come off the pasturo he had v treat for a while. However, ho proved himself to be thoroughly practical, and able to hold his own in the mastery of the team and equipment, and before long there is no doubt that the troublesome weeds will bo a thing of the p.ast. Jt is intended to carry out both grass and clover trials with the object of demonstrating which plots prove the bcrst for the district. Several types of sheep fodders will .also be tried, including silver beet, chouwoulier, turnips and rape.
