FAREWELL TO ARCHDEACON AND MRS. JACOBS.

In spite of Thursday being election day, the gafclen party given as a farewell to Archdeacon "and Mrs Jacob was a great success. The racecourse authorities kindly placed their gardens at the disposal of the parishioners, and thoso who attended experienced their first summer's day this season, the gardens being well sheltered from the wind. In the course of the afternoon, everyone assembled on the large stand, and IMr T; *Prict\ the parishioners' churchwarden, handed to the Archdeacon a purse of sovereigns as a small token o"i their appreciation of his services! Mr Price made reference to the tireless energy ; with which the Y.k.vir had 'Worked in the parish during tne all-too-short time he had been in it, and voiced tho hope of tho parishioners , that tho Vicar and his wife would bo long spared to take active part" in tho service for which they were both so well qualified.

Archdeacon Jacob warmly thanked tho people, not only for their attendance and their gift, but also for their kindness during the time he had been Vicar. . Continuing, he made strong reference to the opportunity that tho Wanganui parish has for extension, and expressed his l-cgret that he would not •be able to assist in its development. However, ho wished all to understand that ho was going only because he felt tho call was imperative, lie was only now beginning to see more deeply into the hearts of many people, and he loved the work, but he must obey the call.

Shortly after tlie presentation, goodbyes wero said, and the people dispersed. During tho afternoon, O'Hara's Orchestra supplied various musical items, and tea was obtained in a kiosk under the control of Dustins, Ltd.

The' Archdeacon and Mrs Jacob left by tho mail train yesterday afternoon for Timaru, where, after a short holiday, they begin work. Tho Rev. H." Reeve, who succeeds tho Archdeacon, is to bo inducted by tho Bishop of the diocese ou Sunday morning. - . ' • ' . '
