DROWNED IN THE RIVER.
I ,A Ba,d fatality occurred in the rivser fl i yesterday, when a man named Charles. H i \V6od, carpenter, of Ball Street, lost H : his life. He had been in town the pre- H j vious day and had evidently been cole- H , brating tho result of the polling, for ■ ' tyhen he went to work yesterday moj-n-.ing at Mitchell and Co.'a works,-Land- H guard'BlufF,; he is said to have been i'totf intoxicated to commence work. It . was deemed advisable to take him back H ! to ( ,town. The launch left about 1145 H p,m. in charge of Mr P. B. Nichol, ■ with' Mr L. Inston as assistant. Wooi H was at the stern of the launch, tho other men being in the engine roopi, '^J »Just after starting they looked round and Wood was.missing. The water at the time was very rough and the tiriu , waa running out strongly. By the/^B [time the launch Could be' turned;^^^H • around,: Wood had j disappeared ' and ■ nothing more was seen of him. Thor^B j launch had to coma up to town and i.Ttfio police were advised of tho tragedy. |, Constables Connor and Riordan visited j^H .itiG: scene and conducted dragging onerj>'.ittiong : but without any success.
