LOCAL AND GENERAL

Orch-estral Society's concert to-night. The Ruahine sailed from Hobart for Wellington yesterday.

Deferred press telegrams to tho United Kingdom may be accepted from te» day at 4|d per word. The word red must bo added to the usual instructions. These messages are subject to a delay of 18 hours.

The latest additions to the Telephone Exchange are: No. 792,. Messrs Ashwell and McAneny, builders and contractors, Victoria Avenue; No. 796, Mr Alexander Foster's, residence, 17 -Barrack Street; and "No. 199, 'Messrs Kwong Tai and Co., fruiterers,, Ridgway. 5treet..,,,...,, ~: . -... .....,>,„,:,.'.,.„ ......

At four o'clock yesterday morning an alarm of fire was, sounded. The outbreak was in Wellington House, a boarding house of 15 rooms'. Tho flames soon swept through the building, but the brigade, which coon arrived on tho scene, extinguished tho ilamef. before they had spread to the adjoining premises of Johnson and Co. and Woolston and Hewetson. Tho proprietress, Mrs Taylor, saved only a few artices of clothing. The building which was pwned by Mr I. Salek, was gutted.

A peculiar caso occupied tho attention, of Dr. A. McArthur, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, on Tuesday. It appeared that a commercial traveller, who was shortly to bo married, left tho sum of £133 with his lover, instructing her to put it into tho savings bank for him. This she agreed to do. Several months afterwards sho withdrew some of the money to pay for a matter she had been concerned in at Christchurch, leaving a balance of £85 10s in tho bank. This was without tho knowledge of tho young man, but wheii_ it came to his ears he forgave tho lady" for what she had done. Tho other day the man went to his fiancee's lodgings to see the lady, but was informed that tho woman had married another person that very day and had left the town. Subsequently the traveller found that not only had his lover decamped with another man, but had taken his £85 10s and some £7 3s 6d worth of his personal belongings as well. Henco tho action. An order was made that tho £85 10s should be repaid to-tho plaintiff. Tho "Danneviiko Evening News'' states :~The high-handod action of tho department is perhaps explained hv tho fact that the mail on Saturday contained a special election edition of the "Dominion," the Wellington organ of tho Reform Party. The issue Avars intended as a counter-blast to tho special edition of the "New Zealand Times." The "Dominion" edition was I intended to be distributd on Saturday ' ! Jw tho staff of tho Dannevirko Post Omce performed splendid work in getting it on their hands yesterday (Monday). There is nothing in the special edition of the "Dominion" ns far as wo can see that, affords any valid reason for its being denied delivery by the post office, arid we fail to see that the post offico in any case is justified in refusing :to deliver mail matter. Tho order to block the delivery of news-* papers was evidently given without any thought for the convenience of the. public, and ,tho usual breakdown follows. Ihe release of the newspapers did not come until many country mails had been missed. A moro glaring example of tho interfering methods of the State Departments under the Ward administration it would bo hard to imagine. In this town tho hoardings are boing plastered "Vote for Liberalism," and the action of the Government in holding back the ."Dominion" newspaper will, strike tho public as being particularly unfair.
