MALT KING WINS THE STAKES. GUINEAS WON BY WOOLERINA. Received Oct. 14, 7.10 p.m. CAULFIELD, Oct. 14. /~iTfe iY m s PrinX meeting opened at {.aulfield m. very pleasurable circumstances. A favourable season was responsible for picturesque surroundings and good tracks. Racing, therefore, was advantageous to the competitors, and there was ideally spring-like conditions. The programme was particularly attractive, as the best horses recently racing at Randwick were enabled to compete owing to their being no clashing between the meeting days. The results were looked for as a guide io tho big events of the next fortnight,-ospc-cially the weight-for-ago races. Sir John Fuller was present with a large party. There was the biggest Guineas crowd on record. Racing was good. There was a great stmgele between Malt Kin? and Comedy King for the stakes, and it was the best finish by v]ei£j;bt-for-a.£re horses seen for some time. Malt King's performance was I particularly fine. He was two lengths behind Comedy King at the half distance and his chances apnearod blade. He ieft the roal fight rather late, but finished splendidly and received a great cvfttmn at the scales. Lola Handicap--Saltaire 1. Sharpshooter 2. Mountain Heather 3. There were 21 starters. Won by H lengths, ~'vitV third horse a neck away. Time. 1.20}. Debutant Stakes—Golden Gauntlet 1. Preside 2, Ventura 3". Other starters : Looh Amo<=, Golden Hope, Charlaian, Misspent, Tipple, Florence and Mara sea. The latter was first off and >. led at the turn from Deeside, Tipnle and Charlatan. Deeside led at the distance, where Golden Gauntlet, who had boon overhauling the field steadily^ passod and won by 1£ lengths. The third horse was •threo-qxiarters of a leno.th away. Time, 49f. Caulfiekl " Stakes.—Malt Kiug 1, Comedy King 2, Lady Medallist 3. Also started • Parisian and Rifle. The field was led at the mile post by Lady Mcd-
| allist. Then came Comedy King and Malt King, Rifle being last. Lady AicUillist led by a length and a half fit the back Comedy King and Malt King being together. At the riverside tho New Zealand horse Avas a length from Comedy King and three lengths from Malt King. Comedy King then spurted and redured the lead to half a length. Coming into the straight Malt King was two lengths away. Malt Kin^; then chased Comedy Kiug, and the two Kines were running head and i<ock at the distance. A grand and oxeir.ing finish resulted in a win for Malt King by a short head, half a neck separating second aiid third horses. 'I iino,'l .£•? £. Steeplechase.—King's Coutitr 1, Vanguard 2. Don 3.
