NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW.

PEOPLE'S DAY

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "Chronicle.") ■ ■ PALMERSTON N , June 22 .-., To-day's weather conditions were the reverse of yesterday's - "brilliant sunshine, and "People's Day" at the Na*tional Daiiy Show .suffered somewhat in' consequence:. It takes'a lot of water '■■ to clamp the ardour of a show visitor, however, 'ami there was^again a. great crowd thronging the spacious halls. >• Jho extra.attraction of the Te AuteWanganm College Struggle added to the drawing power of, the winter carnival, and, as •usual,, proved to be a fine exposition of; tho national game, in which tlic pakeha's capacity to use his head as well as his heels again Brought glory to the blues. It is now generally admitted.that this year's show is. the best yet held, and the Agricultural Department can claim a good deal of the, credit for the excellence of its display. It is the star turn of the exhibtion. For the first time the Department has been allowed sufficient .space to do itself justice. Half of tho largest Kail is occupied by the wellfilled stalls and stands, and New Zealand's resources and the Department's varied experiments. The application of science to agriculture: and* dairy woric are strikingly displayed. The orchard exhibit, the display of wines, and the fine pyramid made of 100 varieties of honey, are all compelling universal interest. In the last-named exhibit New Zealand honey is shown side by side with tho best tho world can produce, and holds its own more than satisfactorily. There are five varieties of wine on shoF—all made at the Waerenga State .'farm, where nearly 10,000 gallons were made last year. Among the exhibits- of competitive field experiments are some good samples of wheats and oats grown on plots of ground near Marton.

This year poultry is a very" strong section of the show, the exhibition heing held under license of the North Island Poultry Association. There are fowls, ducks, pigeons and canaries. Some of, the poultry is of prime quality and the. general standard is a.big advance on previous exhibits.

Competition was strongest in Ply. mouth Rocks and White and Brown Leghorn. In Langshans, Chas. Downey (of Stratford) took* the.'-two available firsts, and in Plymouth Rocks C.'L. Bridges (of Wanganui) obtained first for cockerels and •. second for hen. The same exhibitor also took first in the Black Orpington hen, cock and pullet classes. Entries in Plymouth Rocks were very numerous; the first and second for white hen going to T. B. Holdaway (of Turaliina), .while R. R. Scott and W. Cullen (two^" Palmerston breeders) took the, remaining prizes. White Leghorns were also popular, J. R. SaVage (a Woodville breeder) taking first for cock, T. Collins: (of Lower ■;Hutt) first for hen, and ' T>. ] Stewart (of Norman by) first, for pullet. In White and Buff Orpingtons and Golden Wyandottes, S. Mayo and E. Hodgsori (Wanganui) and E.J. Watson were the most noticeable winners. Silver. Wyandottes proved a little more popular, most of "the honours going to P. W. Brown and T. B. Holdaway.

A new variety of Capuchin caused some interest. D. London showing four birds, all of which were awarded firsts. J. R. Cunninghame (of Taihape), and Ernest Broughton (of Bulls) secured firsts in Brown Leghorns, and A. E. Lett (of •Wanganui): took all the prizes in game. Don Stewart was awarded first for Houdan hen, and O. L. Bridges (Wanganui) carried off four firsts for Indian runner ducks. All the prizes in pigeons and canaries went to locaLbreeders.
