DEATH UNDER PECLILAR CIRCUMSTANCES.

WELLINGTON November 2

A man about 34 years of age, named Wm. ■'McMillan, iaibely -empiLoyed \as kitchenman at Godber's dining rooms, was found dead in lus bed at No. 5, Martin Square, at about, a quarter to six o'clock this morning. It appears that about a week ago the deceased ran a rusty nail into the palm of his left hand, which resulted in blood poison- j ing, -and oiv Tuesday last the hand was ; operated on "at the Hospital.' He left | the institution at half-past two1' in the aft-ernoon, and arrived at *his place of residence - about 5 p.m. He( offered no explanation 1 of "where' he' liad -put hi - the 7 interval and his manner was that of one who had partly lost his senses, lie \ was put to bed, and at 10 p.m. was sleeping peacefully. . This morning, ' when Arthur Climnqck, with whom deceased Avas boarding, went into the bedroom to awaken him, he found him dead. Deceased was of strictly sober habits. Mr. W. R. Haselden (coroner) held an inquest this afternoon. Dr. W., Kington Fyffe, who conducted a post- ! mortem, said <lcoeased was in very ' emaciated condition and had suffered from curvature of the spine. The form of death could not be ascertained until the contents of- the stoniach were analysed, but it was plain that death, was due to some form of poison. Dr. S. J. Simpson, senior house surgeon of the Wellington Hospital, said that deceased was administered gas and his hand operated on for blood poisoning on Tuesday morning. " Dr. Brown performed the" -{Operation, which was successful.

Deceased stated that. Mr. Brittain, chemist, had attended him previously. The inquest was adjourned till Friday to allow the Government Analyst to perform an analysis of the contents of the stomach, and also that the evidence of Dr. Brown and Mr. Brittain may be obtained.
