LITTLE HOPE HELD OUT.

- CHRISTCHURCH, October 16

Captain Allsop,! of the steamer Ripple, which returned to Lyttelton from the Chatham Islands last night, states that he saw no signs of tile missing tug Due© at : the islands, but, within a hundred miles of the islands, on the way down, the Ripple passed a man's cap floating in the water. The cap had a badge, and was evidently an officer's cap. The islanders reported to Captain Allsop that on September Bth, 9th, and 10th, heavy southerly gales were experienced, and he considered there was very, little hopo of any news of the Duco being received.
