THE INQUEST.

CHRISTCHURCH, October 14

An inquest touching the death of Captain Pavitt opened before Mr Haselden, coroner, to-day. W. A. Humphreys, driver of 'the car which collided with the tramway post and caused the death of Pavitt, stated that at first he thought the steering gear was not working properly, but he was not certain whether the skidding was not due to a deflated tyre. He described how the accident occurred, and stated that the car was going about twenty miles an hour when it struck the pole. In cross-examination witness stated that he had four drinks of beor at Yaldhurst —only one on the occasion of his second visit, and aftout twenty minutes before leaving for town.

The inquest was adjourned till tomorrow.
