A MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT.

CHRISTCHURCH, October 14

Whan the Volunteers were returning from the manoeuvres this afternoon in motor cars provided, and in manycases driven by their owners, an accident occurred near the Riccarton Hotel whereby William Ostell Pavitt, officer in command of the Civil Service Rifles, was killed. The car was owned and driven by Mr A. Humphreys, and there were also with him Lieut. Matthews (Civil Service)), : Lieut. GJuthrie (Canterbury Highlanders), and Captain Salcer (Adjutant of the Second North Canterbury Infantry Battalion). The car was travelling at a fair speed round a curve, when the steering gear went wrong, with the result that the car collided with a tramway pole on the side of the road. The car-bounded off the pole on to the road, collided with the next pole, and was overturned. The occupants were thrown out on to the road. Pavitt being killed almost instantaneously. The other _ occxipants escaped with a severe shaking. The car was completely wrecked. Lieut. Guthrie received a severe injury to his leg, and Lieut. Matthews was slightly cut rftout the hand. The other occupants were uninjured. Pavitt was a clerk in the office of the North Canterbury Education Board, and was unmarried.
