RANGITIKEI COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING
The monthly meeting was held at Martin on Saturday. Present: Crs. R. K. Simpson (chairjnan), T. Fitzpatrick, T. Duncan, A. McGregor, Donald Fraser, M. Morrison, A. G. Simpson, and J. Smith. Cr. Lethbridge sent an apology for absence. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Treasury, provisionally approving of loan of £450 for Kawhatau Bridge, and advising that the loan of i £600 for the same bridge is available. From the Minister of Railways, stating that work on the, railway land at Pipae Street Crossing, Marton Junction, will be put in hand as soon as possible. From the Valuer-General, advising that no Assessment Court sitting will be necessary in connection with the valuation of Te Kapua and Awarua Ridings. From Roads Department, declaring part of Taheke and Kuaekeke roads to be county roads. From McKenzie County Council, asking the fourths of rents of pastoral runs bo paid over to the local body for road construction and maintenance owing to the small rates paid on such lands. — The Council decided to co-operate in this matter. From Wellington College Governors/ asking for engineer's report respecting tho cutting of water from section 5, Paraekaretu, by road diversion. —Engineer to report.
From S. Mills, asking permission to remain in cottage erected on unusea street in Ohingaiti and. enclosing petition from ratepayers in favour of his being allowed to do so. —No action taken.
From R. Russell, agreeing to Taoroa Bridge loan proposal. Two petitions were received for lowering grade on road near McDonell's gate, Fern Flats. —Mr Thorns to furnish a report upon the two cuttings asked for.
From Chas. Pitt, agreeing to exchange of land for road of approach to Pipae Street Crossing, Marton Junction, and asking £25 compensation. —Reply to bo sent that the claim will not be entertained.
A petition was received from Parewamu ratepayers, asking for a road to tho Rangitikei River, opposite the blacksmith's shop to connect with the road on the other side.—Mr Thorns to report on the several roads proposed to give the required access. Cr. Fitzpatrick mentioned that settlers in Pohonui favoured going in for a loan to metal the roads in the north end of Te Kapua. Riding.—lt was decided that Mr Mair prepare an estimate of cost and report at next meeting.
It was decided that exchange be added to all cheques sent to the Council outside of Marton. —Three Councillors voted against this proposal.—Cr. Fraser smilingly suggested that if all accounts were paid within a month the Council would accept payment without exchange.
The Council re-appointed under the amended Impounding Act the following persons as rangers for the county:—A. W. Avery, Wm. Smith, Geo. Podjarsky, Thomas Leigh, Timothy Troy. All other previous appointments of rangers were cancelled.
The tender of B. Hackett was accepted for contract 296, widening about 7 chains of Cliff-Whanua Road. —The tenders for water drive and filling Mangahoe Road were considered too high, arid Mr Mair is to deal with them.
The Treasurer reported that receipts for the month totalled £166 13s lid, the principal items being licenses £103 10s and dog tax £44 7s fid. Accounts amounting to £1514 2s 10s were passed for payment, bringing the debit balance to £3751 15s'lOd.
