TO COMMENCE TO-DAY

A unique event, so far as Wariganui : is concerned, will bo inaugurated to- : clay, when "New Zealand Indus!ries i \\ eek ' will commence. It is not necessary to explain what "Industries Week" >s further than to remark that, so far ; as possible, business people will exhibit in their shoo' windows articles mado in Now Zealand, and the local manu-factories-of-various kinds will be thrown open to the.-public. A walk down the Avenue last evening provided proof that the local shopkeepers intend to mi c .thoir window displays attractive. -The displays are sufficient to open the eyes of the unthinking as to the extent and varieties of New Zealand manufactures. They range over an extent dreamt of by few, and include woollen j goods, boots, cabinet making, flour, and i biscuits, bookbinding and printing, groceries and hosts of other articles. The windows are very tastefully arranged, cards bearing the words "Made in New Zealand" being very conspicuous. Xjargi? uampers of visitors are expected in town during the'week and we feel sure they will be pleasantly surprised by the displays, -which have a highly educational value. The Southern Cross Biscuit Company, Ltd., offers three prizes for competition amongst school children of 14 years and under, for th;>. best 'essays on their works and manufactures—lst nriz© £1 Is, 2nd 10s 6d,' 3rd ss. Competitors will bo admitted to the works of the Company during Industries Week, but must bo in the charge of teachers or parents. Not more than 20 will be admitted at one time. Conditions: Open to all.school children 14 "years and under; to be certified to by teacher that essay was written in school, and must not exceed 1500 words. All essays to bo addressed to "The Secretary. South-, orn Gross Biscuit Company, Ltd., Wanganni," the words "Essay Competition" to be written on the outside of Hie envelope. The competition closes on the 10th July, and all essays must be in the hands of the Secretary or in the post on that day. An independent judge will be appointed by the Directors. ,: - ..The Wanganuj Employers' Association haive decided to-offer prizes for essays by school children under 14, descriptive of the window displays, or some one or more New Zealand industries. The prizes are: Ist £2 2s, 2ml £1 Is, 3rd 10s 6d; for children attending any school within a radius of four miles of the Wanganui Educational District outside of that radius. The essays are to be written in" school hours : and without notes, and certified to by, a j .teacher. ' Essays should reach the S-creM / tary" before 10th July, Mr Jas. G. Bassett's woodworking factories. - In addition to the above Visitors will find much to interest them at the Tech- ' nical School^ Museum, tramway car ehed and powerhouse.
