An extraordinary general meeting of shareholders of the Taranaki Petroleum Company was held this afternoon. ."An announcement was made that the directors and delegates representing outside shareholders had arrived at a compromise^ to the effect that a sufficient number of present directors should retire to allow of the election of two directors to represent the Auckland shareholders and one to represent Wellington; also that Mr. Berry should again become director, the chairman to be elected from outside members. DUNEDIN, June 16. At the meeting of the Chalmers Licensing Committee to-day applications for licenses for hotels at "Waikouaiti, Seacliff and Ravensbourne were refused, the committee exercising the full power given by the reduction vote at the local option poll in November.
WELLINGTON, June 16. Sir Joseph Ward, replying to a deputation regarding the deviation of the , Stratford-Ongarue railway, said the matter had been carefully considered by the Cabinet -at least * half-a-dozen times. If people were going to quarrel about routes they might get neither. The deviation, would involve an extra distance of 20 or .30 miles, meaning an additional cost of £290,000 to £300,000. The Government could not see its way to depart from the declaration of a former Minister of Public Works that the Ongarue route s"hould be followed.
