ROADS
(To the Editor.)
- .Sir,-i-While ;tra.velling recently between Wariganui and Waverley I >vas struck with the excellence of the roads, wherever they had been metalled with good shell-rck. It seems ta me that on a shellTrcck road the more-the traffic on it, arid the more the rain fails on it, the firmer does the",shell-rocki bind, and the better the road becomes. It seems to become cemented togther, - and .n6 dust or mud forms from it. t Now, there are very plentiful supplies of shell rock within easy distance of Wanganui. Has it ever been tried on the streets P Apparently it would considerably abate thp mud And dust nuisance .which are so obvious in "Wanganui throughout the year. I se6 Taimo Quay is being covered with ordinary gravel, which will, of course, in wet weather be as muddy and dirty as ever. I think if iliev experimented by a r chain, or two of it "witii good -shell-rock, and-saw the smooilu clean, cement-lik1? surface that wo«3d form whei* he:iyy traffic had rett'cd the rock, we woxiM soon see mote of <mr streets shoU-rocked. If it .foi-med -tli«. same kind of surface as I saw on -the roads there is no doubt it wot^d'mak© ideal streets, and, I should think, .at little cost.—l am. etc..
