(Per Press Association.) ' DUNEDIN, April 21. I The Dunedin Saving Bank trustees ; have donated £500 to the Art Gallery. Local enquiries show that there is no prospect of any increase in the price of potatoes or butter. AUCKLAND, April 21. The annual report of the Auckland Education Board shows that there are 508 schools and 981 teachers in the district; 816 of the latter were above the rank of pupil teacher. The difficulty of filling the vacancies with certificated teachers had been intensified by the Education Act of last year. The receipts were £197,955, and the expenditure left a credit o*r £28,143. The Auckland Railway League has decided to hold a conference on May 26, with the East Coast Railway League, and the Rotorua League, to discuss the route of the East Coast Railway. NEW PLYMOUTH, April 21. At a meeting of the Taumarunui -Licensing Committee held at Waitara this morning wholesale licenses were , granted to Messrs L. Jacob (Mokau) and E. T. Govenlock (Awakino). Counsel appeared for the local branch of the New Zealand Alliance to oppose the application, but was ruled out of court. The police opposed the applications. Two wholesale licenses for Mokau and Awakino were granted by the Bench to-day, the applications being the result of a decision of the S.M. in. a recent case brought by the police of selling in a prohiibted area ; which charge was dismissed, the Magistrate holding that Awakino was not in the proclaimed area. The Prohibition representative objected to the granting of the licenses, but the Magistrate" said he had no locus standi. GISBORNE, April 21. Nurse Godfrey, of Dannevirke, has been; appointed matron of the Gisborne Hospital. Obituary-—William Sievwright, solicitor, an old resident of Gisborne, and formerly a partner with Sir Robert Stout in the firm of Stout and Sievwright. NELSON, April 21. Sailed (10 a.m.). —Rakaia, for-Wel-lington. She takes- over 14,000 carcases of sheep and lamb, in addition to | tallow, wool, horns, and a small quantity of sundries. Immense crowds visited the pioneer ocean liner here, and saw her off safely. At a farewell gathering on board yesterday, Captain Bone ■ said the port was suitable, but required a little more dredging inside and out, ■ and better wharfage and storage room. He and Mr Galbraith, representing the ' New Zealand Steamship Company, said that all the best ports of the Domin- , ion had control of the wharves under the local Harbour Board, and Nelson should not rest till similar conditions were secured here. The inadequacy < of the railway trucks was mentioned, < but otherwise nothing could have ex- j celled the facilities and speed of loading and the assistance and co-operation ' by the local railway staff, especially the stationmaster. Miss Rita Rabone has been awarded ] one of the three exhibitions offered annually by the Associated Board of the R.A.M. and the, R.C.M., London, to G the candidates at the Board's examina- j tions in Australasia who show exceptional musical ability. Miss Rabone was a pupil at St. Mary's Convent, Wellington. She becomes entitled to n free course of tuition in singing at j; the Royal College of Music, and leaves for London to-day. (
