WANGANUI HARBOUR BOARD.
FIRST MEETING OF THE NEW
BOARD
The usual monthly meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board was held in the Board's office last night, when there were present Messrs J. B. Murray, J. C. Paterson, W. G. Bassett, D. Mason, A. G. Bignell, N. Meuli, T. B. Williams, C. E. Mackay (Mayor), and the Collector of Customs (Mr W. F. Dickey). CHAIRMAN.—Mr J. B. Murray was unanimously re-elected chairman.
LOAN.—The Chairman stated that the loan had been floated, but particulars were not yet to hand. ACCOUNTS.—Accounts amounting* to £1063 9s 5d .were passed for payment. CLAIM. —One of the Board's barges had been sunk by the Storm, and a claim was sent to the owners of the steamer. The damage claimed was £120 lls Bd.—Mr Bassett moved that a letter be written to the company saying that if the claim be settled at once without prejudice the Board would accept oner half the amount.—Carried, with one dissentient.
BOATSHED.—Permission was asked by Mr Trussell to be allowed to erect a boatshed on the spit near Turnbull's store.—Declined.
HAULING GROUND.— Application from John Dawson that the moorings of yachts opposite TurnbulPs be shifted so that fishing may be carried on. —Declined.
THE KAIKOURA INCIDENT-—Capt. McKellar, of the Kiakoura, wrote with reference to the recent incident, and complaining that the Board had committed a breach of privilege in handing his letter to the newspapers.—Resolved that the secretary write to Capt. McKellar, informing him that as the letter was addressed to the secretary it was read in open Board. : THE CHARLES EDWARD.—Messrs Levin and Co. were granted an extension of time in which to shift the Chas. Edward.
PROTEST.—Several natives forwarded a petition protesting against Mr Ross's application for a lease of the Putiki foreshore. —It was decided that the secretary write Mr Ross that the Board had no power to lease the land. WHARF.—The District Engineer, Railway Department, wrote asking that he be advised wliat is proposed in connection with the town wharf extension}*, also that plans of same be submitted to him.—The Engineer reported that the plans had been since submitted to the Department.
MAORI CAMP—Mr A. C. Bootes, proprietor of the Aotea Boarding-house, wrote in strong terms complaining of tlie dirty state, oi the Maori camp on Taupo Quay.-f-It -= was resolved- that tho police be instructed tq^ .remove any Maoris camped piythe Harbour Board's sections-in'that'locality. MOORING.—Mii N. Andrew wrote applying for .a-".mooring..space'near the bridge.—lt was resolved that the application be granted during the pleasure of the Board. ; , .
SOUTH SPIT MOLE.—Mr Leslie Reynolds wrote suggesting that he should visit Wangahui re changes.—Mr Meuli moved that the Board forthwith procure the necessary plant "for the construction of the South Mole, and that th said works be proceeded lith at the earliest possibles \ date;-* Carried unanimously.
