OHAKUNE NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Tho township has been quiet lately. A lot of men have left the Public Works. The sawmillers, trying to get the duty increased on Oregon timber, have not been pushing on very briskly, but I have no doubt they will scon settle down to business again.
I cannot understand how it is th?t 20, years ago you could get good 0.8. timber in the Forty. Mile Bush, delivered at 6s per 100 feet, and now they want 9s and 11s 6d per hundred. How is it?
Buildings are still being erected. I "sen Neils Anderson is putting mp s.. large 'workshop just .beyond Warkton ' ■Villa, ■■ ■:■- T v-:;- .-• ; h r
'Good play companies have been here -latt'ly and did'fairly'^vell. .< > The new Town Board has lec h elected in the usual way. Some of the coin-, missioners elected are mo^t elated therewith, and are appointing a town clerk and solicitor, the former at £25 a year and the latter at £35 psr annum as a retaining fee only. They must be going in for litigation strong. I see a new draper from New Plymouth—who has been for years manager for the New Zealand Clothing Factory there—has opened a lar^e double shop in Mr Welch's premises. I believe he has rented the whole premises for a term with a purchasing clause for £950, when the rent censes on the completion of ths purchase. The sale was negotiated by the firm of Armstrong and Co., land agents. This gentleman (Mr Lightband) should wove of great assistance to the place, being closely associated with cricket and ether sports.
