SALEK'S BUILDINGS.

LATEST ADDITIONS TO LOCAL

BUSINESS PREMISES

One of the most eligible and commanding business sites in and around Wanganui—at the corner of the Avenue and Guy ton Street—has been utilised for the erection of a handsomely-design-ed and very substantial-looking block of buildings, and as the contract is now nearly completed some few oarticulars may prove of interest not alone to probable incoming tenants but as also indicating to the general public the rapid growth from a business point oi view of what is known as the unper end of the town. It may be stated at tho outset that the ground—having a frontago of 121 feet to Guyton Street, and 66 feet to the Avenue—was acquired'by Mr I. Salek, and he recognising future possibilities forthwith engaged the cciv vices of Mr T. H. Battle as architect, who at once drew up plans in accorddance with the lessees' desires, which nave proved all round entirely satisfactory from every point of view. The contract— under the circumstances, a very large one—was handed to Mr J. G Sims (of Ingestre Street), and this well known builder lost no time in getting tho work well under weigh, to such effect indeed that the block of buildings now under" notice to-day stands as yet another monument to the skill of the local artisans. Taking-the. area as above given the Guyton Street frontage presents the bolder aspect, fov here, including tho corner, are five shops with thre^ others in tho Avenue, leading towards Ingestre Street It may be saiely asserted that up to the time of writing tho block occupies the largest frontage of shons in Wsmganui, there bein~ i st° .lees *Qan 20° feet of verandah space! Naturally, to the passer-by, this pile or two-storeyed brick building, with tuek-pomted front, cement facings, and bold pediments, ab 01120 catches the eye emphasised b- the owner's name thereon, and sot off by tho admirable finish especially with regard to the undo-sido ot the verandah in cement blaster Taking uhat may well be termed the coiner shop first it certainly has a most imposing frontage with its space of 40 x 25 feet, and four larop wirdows. Then running up the Avenue arc tho thops occupied by Mr Campion (hairdresser) Mr Barnard (chemist) and one vet untenantod. Those arc all 40 *x 15ft and have excellent up-stiiis accommodation Taking the Guyton Street rrontago there may be stated to be live shops—all 40 x Jo, one cf them cccupied by Mr Draffin as a cyclists' cmponunC and as with the Avenue premises, havino- up-staiis accommodation. Attention must next be directed to the two sho-s immediately alongside tho isaivation Arm- Barracks, those bon^ spoiMaPv provided with siovo, bathroom^ etc. Upstairs, near the corner, with entrance from Guyton Street, is to bo occupied by Mr Taylor, ih* wellknown dentist, who has made elaborate arrangements for the fitting-un tvoccs including five large rooms.—for wa'.fne' operating, workioom, .study, et-. noticeable also being a fine largo well-li^ht-ed passage for the convenience of "the visitor, and be it horo noted, too that all the rooms in this suite- aro plastered in electric plaster. The association of the artisans answerable for th« o-a--dual progress and workmanlike methods, togcthc- with smart energetic completion ha-» been a most plnasurablc one. and in summarising those mainly responsible may be meritoriously mentioned— bracket nd with tho names of Iho architect (Mr T. H. Battle) and tho contractor (Mr J. G Sims> those of tho sub-contractor*—Mr J. W Mdovton 'bricklaying),. Mr J. A mold' (plumbing) and Messrs R. and E Tin^cy (painting and decorating).—all their work throughout being worthy of special^ mention. . -
