(United Press Association.—Copyright.)
Received Sept. 3, 1.15 a.m. MELBOURNE, Sept. 2,
Rough, rainy weather continue?.
'Admiral Sperry, replying to an address from the Metropolitan Board cf Works, said the opportunity of maku.g the acquaintance of Australia was in the interest of the development of the Pacific territories belonging to.the tw.o Powers. . The stronger Australia ma-lo the lines of communication not only with San Francisco but with Vancouver, the more senure would be her position. Not only would Australia by this route come closer to her sister in the Empire—the great Dominion of Canada—but therein was a route >t6 the great and. essential neutral Power. The route was so removed geographically from assault and so. secure . that Australia had a double interest in developing it, because it gives a- secure road to the Home country and the shortest at that.
