SPEECH BY MR DEAKIN.
MELBOURNE, September 2. Mr Deakin^, speaking at a dinner tendered by the Yacht Club to the American officers, said the Australians, for the first time, had seen a fleet, of battleships,- and they would do well to study the policy behind the men's guns. Australians could not afford to give their defence into any other hands than their own.
