HIGH COMMISSIONER'S WEEKLY

REPORT.

WELLINGTON, August 31. Following is the High Commissioner's cable, dated 29th August:—

The mutton market is dull, except for prime light weights. North Island mutton is quoted as follows: —Light.weights 3Jd, heavy weights 3|d. Canterbury light weights 4|d, heavy weights 3|d. The lamb market is slightly weaker, with less demand. Supplies of Home grown lambs are heavy, and are lower in price. New Zealand lambs: Canterbury brands sfd, other than Canterbury 5 l-Bd. The beef market is firm. The supply is running' short, but the high prices are restricting business in •New Zealand beef. Hindquarters 4Jd, forequarters 3|d.

The butter market is quiet, with little doing, but there is a good feeling prevailing. The stock of New Zealand butter is exhausted. . Danish is quoted at 120s, Canadian llos, Siberian 108s per cwt.

The cheese market is steady. There is not much demand, but prices are firm. The stock of New Zealand cheese is exhausted. Canadian is quoted at 61s per cwt. -

The hemp market is speculative, but quiet. There is little doing, but a good feeling prevails. Following are current quotations: Good fair grade on spot £26 15s, fair grade on spot £23, fair current Manila on spot £23 10s. October to December shipment are quoted as •follows: —Good fair grade £26 10s, fair grade £22 10s, fair current Manila £23 10s. Last week's output from Manila amounted to 24,000 bales.

The wool market-, is steady, with an improved demand. -The following are current quotations foirßradford tops: 36's low crossbreds'lOcl^ 40's low crossbreds lOjd, 44's medium crossbreds lHd, 50's halfbreds Is 3fd, 56's quarter"breds Is 6jd> 60's merinos Is lid.

The hop market is very quiet. Buyers are not keen to do business in cocksfoot seed.
