The attention of jurors summoned to attend the sittings of" the Supreme Court is directed to a notice in another column that their attendance will not further be required.

At the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last evening the following new members were elected:—Messrs B. T. Ringer C. A. Harrison, George Gordon', H. Moore, D. Meldrum, Walter Grey, A. Harris, Joseph Woolstone.

The Aotea, which arrived at Dunedin on Saturday after an uneventful passage, shipped 60 little grey oivls before leaving London, and of this "number 60 came to hand in splendid condition.

Mr S. Jickell, C.E., reporting on a drainage scheme for Gisborne, reooni mends a separate system with one pumping station, using hydraulio pumps, at a total cost 0f,£107,874.

A rather amusing little coniedy was enacted on a recent Sunday in.a. Chinese vegetable garden, J where ten ; Celestials were occupied in digging. Two' railway employees (says the," Wairarapa Daily Times") approached the fence,, and brie of them pulled out his -book and pretended to write. First orie~ and then mother of the Ohinaiien lookM up, and, sticking his spade in the ground, ecraped his boots, shouldered his epade, and tho whole lot filed off to their whare.

. At the Supreme Court yesterday one oHthe counsel present asked a question with regard to the order of cases. His Honour Mr Justice Chapman said that if arrangement's obuld not to come to with reference to. fixing the order of the different cases he would be compelled, as a Judge had done before, to order that air litigants and counsel should attend the Court from the commencement of the sittings, and be ready to go on when called upon in order to avoid delay. This, of course, would prove expensive, but it could not be helped if the parties would not arrange as to the order.

The local Lodge of Foresters held their annual social, and dance in the Fire Brigade Hall last evening, and it proved very successful. The hall was effectively decorated ; with festoons of fernery, intermingled with Chinese fancies. The floor was in splendid cone dition,and 95- couples danced to music brightly played by 'Mr Copley. The airangements were in the -capable hands of Mr N. Nicholl, who, with a committee consisting of Messrs O. R. Ham -mond and.A. H. Cpe, ensured the success of the evening. The M.'s C, Messrs E. Perrott,-Flynn, and Sweeney, are to be congratulated on the manner in which they carried out their duties. Mr Tyson, from the Court Levin, was also present. " A splendid supper was provided by Mr T. Hodson.

The latest additions to the Telephone Exchange are No. 606, Mr M. B. Barnard, chemist, Victoria Avenue, 608, Madame Durant, hair and face specialist, Guyton Street, and 607, Messrs Chamberlain and Co., wood, coal, and coke merchants, Ridgway Street.

The Merrymakers, who have provided local patrons .with two of the best andl brightest entertainments of the variety order ever witnessed1 in Wanganui, concluded their season at the Opera House last evening. It is to bo hoped we have not seen the last of these clever entertainers.

At the meeting of tho Chamber of Commerce last evening the President eulogised the late Mr A. D. Willis, and on his motion the following resolution was passed in. silence:—" That t bo recorded in" the minutes that this Chamber sincerely regrets the death ot Mr A. I>. Willis, and that a letter of sympathy be sent to his bereaved widow and family, expressing our sincere sympathy with them in their loss."

We would remind our readers of the concert to be given by the City Band at the Hospital to-morrow afternoon (weather permitting), when the following, programme will be submitted:— March, " Royal Marquis" (M. Raynor); selection, "Sandringham" (M. Raynor); march, "On the Alert" (Bulch"; selection, " Indra" (Bulch); march, "The Pedestrian" (Allen); sacred selection, " Sabbath Garland" (Newton). The band will appear in their new uniforms, and the concert will commence at 3 o'clock.

Sheriff's Studio rang with the -music of the bagpipes last evening, the occasion being the smoke concert given by the Caledonian Society. A large number were present, and a very happy and successful evening was spent Mr Donald Ross occupied1 the chair. Mr R. Bruce, of Hunterville, gave an address on " Scottish national sentiment." Other items were contributed by Messrs Lewis, Glasgow, and Thomson (songs), Glubb, and Bruce (recitations), Masters McNiven (Highland fling), C C. Macdonald, D. Ross, N .McKenzie Forbes (bagpipes), P. C. Price (Scottish selections on gramaphone). The previous president (Mr P. K. Simpson) was present, also -Mr A. Strachan (vice-presi-dent). An excellent supper was provided by 'Mr Dustin.
