HALCOMBE NOTES.
A SERIOUS ACCIDENT
(From Our Own Correspondent.) A very serious accident occurred here ""last night (Tuesday) shortly .before 5 o clock. Mrs Win, Williams and her sister, Mrs Murphy, with three, children, .were returning from the Railway Station in a gig, when the horse, a Jato, (purchase, .became unmanageable and bolted do^yn the road. Mrs Williams attempted to keep the horse on the straight road- leading tec Kakariki, but the animal insisted upon turning into the town at the railway crossing It was going at such a rate that the off-side -wheel was skidding and the near wheel up in the air. This struck a telegraph pole> with tremendous impact, throwing the occupants down the bank close by Mr Flemming's store. Upon, extricating the sufferers, Mrs- Williams was found to have sustained a compound fracture of-the thigh, and Mrs Murphy's little girl had (her leg broken below the kuee. The ■others were severely brnised- and shaken. Dr Willis was telephoned for, and was speedily in ■ attendance. Very great sympathy is felt for the family, and it is to be honed the injured ones will soon b* on a fair road to recovery. On viewing the scene of the aoeddent it appeared miraculous that the telegraph pole should have been there, as otherwise the gig would have gone over a steep bank, and most probably aifatality wojiH have taken place. The telegraph pole bears a deep indentation high nr>. The gig was smashed to pieces, but the horse was not much the 'worse. Tlio latest reports ore that the sufferers are as well as can be expected after their trying and painful ordeal.
