HARBOUR SCHEMES.

To the (Editor

Sir, —TJnfortiunaitely, I think, for Wangainui, the supporters of Mr Feild's schema appeair to 'have little or nothing to gain by pressing their wishes at this juncture. The public are at the mercy of-a P'atr-bour ißpard thafr insiste upon its power to disregard the voice of the people. ißeckkiss of .their constituents' entreaties, the members of the Board can, if they choose, block progress f#r the time being, or risk a very large amount of public money upon schemes ■which they themselves do not seem- to clearly understand, and which to judge by the past can hardly be other wise than experimental. Though all along a beMeyeir in the general - outlines of Mr Feild's scheme, I have, I must confess, entertained the doubt, voiced by Mr Bassetfc, as to tihe efficiency of -willow s'takee, which my experience goes to gnaw are hard to get in the desired long etralight (lengths. It may ibe that the Board after trying dredging for so long without the success anticipated will consider it worth while to experiment 'with >the cheaper scheme. But what I Should like to ask, for the satisfaction of all concerned, is that tihe Board should lay its expensive proposals before a public meeting or else enlighten the public by distributing lithograph plans of the works the Board has in view. Such action would certainly justify the small outlay involved.—l am, etc.,

WELL WISHER
