THE NELSON CARNIVAL.
A SUCCESSFUL OPENING

The city is full of visitors for th© carndval, steamiers having brought large numbera during the past week, and about 800 arrived to-day. The carnival was originally intended as a celebration of the Trafalgar Oantenaa-y, but the season being inconvenient, it was decided to hold the same at the time the celebration of the anniversary of Nelson was proceeding, and a full week's festivities were arranged. The proceedings began to-day with a church parade; which was attended 'by volunteers and firemen, including representatives to the Fire Brigade Conference, as well as the bands taking part in the Band Contest. Those in the parade had to proceed to several churches.
To-day ha§ 'been rather showery, 'but hopes are ©ntevteined -of fine weather for the iremainder of the Carnival. The city is gaily decorated <witih bunting, palms, etc.
