SENSATIONAL ESCAPE FROM AN ASYLUM.
DANGEROUS LUNATIC AT LARGE
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 20. A sensational escape, which- appears to have been kept very quiet, occurred at the Aviondale Asylum *>n the morning of Maftohi 11:" It v appears that an inmate named Joseph Henry White, who in 1899 attempted to shooit Mrs. J. ■StraiJieni, nelieving officer to the Charitable Aid Board, for which h& received, a sentence of eight.yeairs' imprisonment, waa incarcerated there in 1901 on accouriijNpf hia behaviour at Moun^t Eden GaoL On the imorning, of March 11, after a warder had .gone his rounds, AVhite escaped through a window, taking a few bed clothes with him. Although the man was scantily clothed, he got away from the vicinity of the Asylum, borrowing a pair of trousers and a coat soon afterwards. Since then he hag been scan in several places, . but whenever the p^ice attempted to catch him he evaded tiem. The escapee^ who ig considered to be very. dangerous, -%4 still at large.
