CORRESPONDENCE.
THAT OBNOXIOUS LETTER AGAIN
To the Editor
- Sir, —The Chairman of the Waitotarai County Council again retreats and takes up a position in rear of his foreman of works, and in his insidious way causes the foreman to admit my alligations. But ho makes mo say that I accused a eurfiaceman of grabbing sweetbrair. Now I never accused anybody, much less a servant of the Council. lam quite aware that they —the servants; —have to obey instructions. I simply said that I had noticed a surfacenuui carefully grubbing sweetbriar, and I naturally thought that he had received instructions to do so. But it waa really a peculiar coincidence that this particular surfaceman should bo grabbing these two particular bushes j usfc as I was passing. And I have to thank him very much indeed, for standing to his guns and confirming my statement. Now in the Councils .letter to the "Herald" •on the Bth of February it discla-iaras all irespeonsiblity of eweetbriar, but the foreman is made to say that he approves of ■the surfaceman's action in grubbing the above mentioned busihes. A good deal of the letter is taken up in .yiioyy of liie foreman which is copied—l should say— from my letter to the "Herald of. the 10th February. I should say now, that, if the Council has a spark of manliness in its composition, it will rescind the offensive resolution re my letter of the 4th of February,' and expunge tho aiiuute from the minute boo'<.—l am, «Ac, JOHN HANDLEY, Okehu, 7th February, 1905.
In connection with the above, tho following letter was addressed to the Council for consideration at Monday's meeting :— „
Okehu, 6th March, 1905. The Chairman Waitotara County Council. Sir, —Herewith I enclose my letter of the 4th February for your reconsideration. No doubt your Council has satisfied itself in tho interval of the truth of my allegations. And as to alleged disrespect on my part, there waa none, and nono intended. I therefore —most respectfully—request that your Council rescind the resolution re my letter and expunge the minute from the minute book.—Yours faithfully, JOHN HANDLEY.
(Wo understand that the above let teadid not reach the Council's office till after the meeting had closed.; therefore ■it. did not come up for consideration. — Ed .Chronicle,): , •
