SAD ACCIDENT.
YOUNG MAN KILLED
An inquest .was held at the Court House yesterday afternoon to inquire into the circumstances connected with the death of a young man named Herbert John Boyd. Mr. R. L. Stanford, S.M. (coroner), presided, and the jury was as follows: —Messrs. R. W. Comyns (foreman), John Sim, Frank France, Charles Burrell, W. R. O'Hara and Horace Alexander.
From the evidence the following facts were adduced. A party consisting of the deceased (aged 21), Thomas Charles Fell, and George Pritchard, were engaged on a bush-felling contract on Mr Eweh McGregor's property near Mangaomaho. ': About ; 5.30 on Wednesday evening Pritchard and the deceased had just got through a tawa tree, and as it was caught in a neighbouring tree and hanging on the stump Boyd got a lever and tried to.bring it down. While inserting the lever, the tree jumped back suddenly and knocked Boyd down, pinning him to the ground. His mates came to his assistance and one levered the tree up while the other pulled the sufferer away. Seeing that Boyd was seriously hurt, they sent for a doctor, who, after attending to the young man, ordered his removal to the Wanganui Hospital. He was brought down by the 11 o'clock train yesterday morning, and nearly collapsed several times during the journey. On arnvai at the hospital he was attended by Dr. Reid, but died from shock about an •hour -after admission to the institution. A verdict of "accidental death" was -returned. .., It is understood that deceaseds mother resides in Gisborne.
