America's Monte Carlo.

America has found its Monte Carlo, and just now Saratoga is outdoing the famous gambling resort of Europe (says the Telegraph correspondent) Since the closing of the clubs at Long Branch, gamblers, big and little, have migrated to the Spa, and never before has there been such heavy play on races and at all games of chance. Millionaires by the score and men and women prominent in the social life of bag cities rub elbows with the plungers at the l-acecourse by day and with noted gamblers and card sharpers at the "clubs" at night. " ixot Spring and Long 'Branch in their palmiest days could never boast the miscellaneous gathering of upper and lower life that crowds Saratoga to-day. Men who follow games of chance for a livelihood make up the bulk of the visitors, but boxes and the grand-stand at the racecourse and the dining tables of the great clubhouse, with only silk portieres to separate it from pulette wheels and faro lay outs, are always ci'owded with men and women whos« names are prominent in high life. Gambling for high stakes is no longer the exception. Railroad magnates and social dignitaries back their *udcmient for thousands. both on the track and on the green cloth. Several 50,000 dollar bets were recorded last week on horses, and book-mak-ers are beginning to'be wary of the-plung-ers.' The New .York Evening Journal prints a strong denunciation of the npen manner in which .the authorities of the state connive at this violation of the law.
