OPIUM PROHIBITION.

Per Press Association

HOKITIKA, September 23

The first case under the Opium Prohibition Act of last session, was heard at the Magistrate's Court to-day. The police yesterday arrested at Kumara a Chinaman, just arrived from- Dunedin, witli 19 tins of opium in his possession. He was charged with importing opium suitable for smoking, and with carrying it with intent to evade the prohibition of the article. After a lengthy hearing the Magistrate dismissed the information, holding there was no proof of the Chinaman having endeavoured to sell, and the Act did not make it an offence for a person to have opium in his possession.
