An alarming sight is reported from Hicks^ Bay, on the authority of local residents and matives. They state that on Sunday afternoon, the 6th, they saw what they declare to be a barque on fire. They fii'st saw the vessel! about twelve miles off the" land, under sail, and later saw tiio flames leaping upwardfe and: destroying all but the sanaHl sail. Afterwards they got a glass and say they could plainly dawem the outline of the vessel, which remained in sight! until dark, but wae not toi be sieen next day. The sea was smooth at the time, and the fire lasted about twenty minutes'. Wreckage was afterwards discovered' ashore. Asked why no report had; been made, tihe men stated they were at Iron Point, distant from communication, and" they thought the fire would' be reported from other places on the coast. They awaited Auckland and Gisborne papers, and, receiving no report of the occurrence, on arriving at Gisborne to-day by schooner they gave the information.
