In the Suprame Court an action was commenced claimiiaiigi £200 idSamages for alleged slander of Edmond Power, licensee of the Douglas Hotel. Laffey, the defendant, is licensee of the Courts Hotel, and accused Power of tkfeft. The case }s unfinished.

WELLINGTON, September 22.

Tbdmas Underfill!, a wharf labourer, was committed for triaj'on a charge of broaching cargo. The Magistrate said, that not only tlhe character of the prisoner but the character of the porb also was on trial. Mr. Wilford, for th» prosecution, said! the Union Company had paid £106 for pillaged goods in the last four months.

Another wharf labourer, aimfflarly charged, was remanded.

AUCKLAND, September 22.

Frank Pullman came before the Supreme Court tq-day for sentence. His Honor said this was a most serious case, as there were four charges of forgery and! thirteen of theft, the total amount involved being £780. Hm Honor asked if the prisoner haoi imade any statements as to what had become of the money. Detective Mcliveney deposed! that the prisoner told him he hadi spent the whole of the money in liquoring andl shouting for Menda. Mr. Tole «aid that of the total sum £148 was in 1901 and the remainder in 1902. Detective Mcliveney stated that the prisoner received £150 a year and had a free liouse. He had a wife and several children. Prisoner was sentenced to five years' imprisonment on each case, sentences concurrent.
