WANGANUI v. MANAWATU.
The fates were kind to those Wanganui golfers -who jotimeyed to Palmerston on Saturday to do battle iagiainst the Manawatu Golf Club. The weather, atrocious as it was, "both befoite and after* ifcbe match, cleared for the three hours of the .game, and: enabled both sides to show their true form. The finish Was most exciting, for though the Wanganui men were leading by 4 when the ninth pair coime in, it was anticipated that Monro, w'ha had at once go* five yap on hist opponent, Bates, would com* in an easy winner, and so give the advantage to Pahnerstoin. This was not to be, for the Wanganui player stuck to -has man, and was beaten by one hole only, thereby securing a threehole victory to his side. Hai-old, playing in great form, inflicted a severe defeat oln his oHhtime opponent, A. S'trang, whose putting wa* responsible for hip fiaiilure. Wood, driving in capital style, established a great lead oiver his opponent, Dr. Wilson, who, however, played up so gamely tfhat, but for a m&sedi putt on the test green, he woudl have squared the match.' Saunders, H. B. Wateon, and J. D. Greig also beat their men. Dr. Stowe and G. Saunders had the closest of games. The fcimer, who plays sound gilf, got home by 2 holes. The. Dannevirke contingent, Newenhiam and Irvine, did well against Greenwood and D. Mureliison.__..Tlie latter, though driving well, was somiewhat at sea at the short game. As usual, the Manawatu players were indefatigable in their attentions to their visitors. Lunch and tea were provided on the links by the ladies of the club, to whom the best thanks of the Wangantii players are due. The linb-.i, owing to the floods, are in poor condition, but we ventura to think that much more comlM ba done with the ground at tlhe disposal of the club. The Christdhurch course of 60 acres contains 18 very fair holes, two at least of which are longer than anything at Palmerston. Details of the score are appended: — A. Strong (Manawatu) 0 v. J. Harold (Wanganui) 8, Dr. Stowre 2 v. G. Saunders 0, Dr. Wilwn 0 v. W. G. Wood 1, A. Hopkins 0 v. Imla.y Saundere 4, G. Ph!arazyn 0 v. H. B. Watson 2, 0. T. Monro (captain) 1 v. H. D. Bates 0, L. A.
