SUPPOSED LEPROSY.
DUNEDIN, August 17
There was a stormy discussion,.at: the meeting of the Waihimo Council over the case of a Chinaman who was reported some time ago by Dr. Masbn, Chief Health Officer, to be suffering from leprosy. ' Dr. Ogston, the local Healtflv Officer, wrote, pointing out that tlxa Council; by letting the man escape, hadi rendered!-itself liable to various penalties. Nearly all the Councillors expressed the conviction that the man was nob suffering from leprosy, but frost bite. The Chinaman himself said that, he had received injury at Nevis from "too muchi snow," and that he had been in the same; coiiditioji for 20 years. The raw finger and the. stumps had now quite healed and the man worked occasionally. It was decided to take steps to provide an. isolation, hut, but Councillors stated! that it would take a castle to keep the man from going to Macrae's when he desired to.
