The Royal Comm:ss:pn appointed by the Federal Giovernmerit oj>ened an inquiry into the Drayton Grange. A naval transport officer testified that ar-
rangements: had been, carried out iii accordance with Admiralty regulations. An excess number of troops was not carried, but the ship was in a very dirty condition. ■ Dr. Shields gave evidence that not more that 75 per cent, of those carried should have been carried. The ventilation was bad, and sickness to a large extent could be traced to want of exercise and good sleep/Ing accominodatiwn. Hospital accommodation "was by no anieans sufficient. Many men who should have been in hospital could not be received. The medical officers were insufficient andl no nurses, were admitted. JThe j-Mp wa» v dirty, ■.antt the habits of some of the-jneH-most- objectionable. This, amd! to a large extent want of discipline, helped to. contribute to e*ickniess. He advised that the sick be landed at Albany in order to save life, but he was disregarded.
