Havward and Maclaren commenced the anninga of the Englishmen with the task set them. They opened slowly, but after 20 minutes they warmed up and rattled 50 on to the board in as many minutes. Clarke and Mcßeth were bowling. Hayward opened his shoulders, and the former was lifted into the smokers' reserve for five. The fielding was patchy, and :\t times absolutely bad. At 70 Kermode deposed Clarke, both batsmen hitting the fast bowler for frequent foura. The centuiy came up for 88 minutes Hopkins relieved Mcßeth. and Noble took •Kermode's end. Maclaren having knocked a dozen off the latter**! final over. Maclaren scored off Hopkins, leg-glancing !him repeatedly. He gave a magniiioent display of free cricket. . The bowling! was tied np and lacked devil. Noble getting practically no work on. At 154 Mcßeth was tried again m place of Hopkins. Maclaren brought his century into view aittid a great ovation. The task occupied two Lours and ten minutes. Hayward continued to bat splendidly, i&oiigh he scored less rapidly than his skipAfi 165 Keimode relieved Noble. TVlaclaren gave a chance when his score was at 106, but Trumper misjudged the direction of the fall and failed to run up Trumper was the sixth bowler tried. He replaced Mcßeth at 190. The second centuiy was readied m two lours and thirty-five* minutes. Hayvrard was cheered, having recorded a •chanceless century in three hours. Both proceeded to slash the bowling about tremendously. They piled on the next 50 very rapidly. , When stumps werei drawn for the day England Lad lost no wickets for £>b—Hay■ward 115, Maclaren 136, ,<mndnes 4.
