The partnership between Gregory and Noble was dissolved after eight nad been added to the overnight score, Noble mishitting Jessop into Lilley's hands. Sis for 345. Carter was next, and opened with great confidence with several fine clean strokes, playing him to double figures1. He anxious to win his1 spurs in international cricket, having in view his chance as second wicket-keeper with the next Australian eleven to visit England. Both batsmen punished Jessop heavily, who gave way to McGahey. Carter then timed a run off a light tap, but Quaife got in a fast return to the bowler, who threw down the wicket.— Seven for 391. Clarke partnered Gregory, and commenced a lively innings. The fourth century appeared for five hours and forty minutes' work. Clarke batted) vigorously, and soon had 25 on the board, but Gregory closed his line display in an unsatisfactoiy way. Clarke hit one to McGahey, who checked it but did not hold it. Gregory ran half-way up the pitch, and Quaife followed up and got the ball back to the- bowler. Gregory retired from a faultless innings. He hit fifteen fourers. and batted three hours and fortyeight minutes. —Eight for 417. Eermode followed after lunch. Clark, within a few minutes of resumption, got his leg in front.—Nine for 432. Mcßeth filled the vacancy, but in trying a risky run lost his wicket without an addition to the total.
