BRITISH MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
The annual meeting of the New Zealand branch opened proceedings yesterday morning at 11 o'clock, with a meeting of the council.
At 12 o'clock there was a. general meeting. '■ Dr W. Young, of Wellington, who is proceeding to England shortly, was appointsd a delegate to represent New Zealand at the annual meeting of the parent Association. An invitation was received from the Otago section to meet at Dunedin for the next annual conference, which was unanimously accepted. Dr C'olguhoun, of Dunedin, was, on the motion ofDr Stenhouso (St. Bathan's), seconded by Dr Morton Anderson (Christchureh), unanimously elected president of the next Conference. Dr Collins, president of the Wellington section, was elected president of the Council, and Dr Graham Campbell (Christchurch) Parliamentary secretary. Dr Mason was unanimously re-elected editor of the New Zealand Medical -oiirnal. It was resolved that the sections be invited to appoint sub-editors to assist Dr Mason by furnishing him* with local medical information.
At the evening session Dr Thomas, the retiring president, thanked the members generally for the support he had received during his year of office, and insisted upon the importance of members of the sections contributing to the Journal, which had already obtained great success. He then inducted Dr Saundors, the president-elect, into the chair.
Dr Saunders delivered a thoughtful and instructive address on "Some Diseases Incidental to School Life, with Methods of Combatting them." Dr Saunders dealt with eyesight in schools, and expressed the opinion that some schools were practically manufactories of defective eyesight. He dwelt on the importance of posture and the influences of seating accommodation in developing spinal ailments. He also referred to the isolation of infectious diseases and the preventive measures to be adopted. Heart disease, deafness, and some other diseases incidental to school life were also referred to.
Dr Mason (Wellington) complimented Dr Saunders on his very able address, and proposed a vote of thanks, which was seconded by Dr Martin and carried with applause.
