WAIMARING COUNTY COUN CIL.
To the Editor.
Sir,- -Before tho beginning of the last session of Parliament, it was decided to form a county of the Waimarino, by seperating from" the Wanganui County; so a public inreting was called for the purpose of electing a committee to attain that object, when a largo and inHueneial committee was elected, comprising the leading sutlers of the district. It was hoped that tho Bill would be carried through without ii hitch, when such men as Messrs Nathan, Brass, Bennett, and Smith weie left to look after it. A petition was signed almost unanimously by the ratepayers, and enough money collected to p-iv all expences. The Wanganui Council wus in-' terviewed, and offered no objection, Mr; Hutchison, M.H.R., draughted the Bill, and defined the boundries, so that the ratepayers were satisfied that there would be no trouble about the division ; but al**. they were trusting to a broken reed, as the gentlemen named, left the business to look after itself, either being of too trusting a nature, or not caring to trouble themselves about the matter after taking it in hand ; so, at the very last moment, the Bill was thrown out, owing to unsufficient advertising. Now, Sir, what puzzles me is this. Why do such men undertake public duty unless they are prepared to carry it through? or, is it incapacity? which J can hardly imagine. The result, is now, that the whole of the work will have to be gone through again ; the same expense incurred, to say nothing of the loss of another year. I think that those who made tho blunder, ought to bear the brunt of the trouble, and so teach them in future,' "Not meddle with things tliey do not understand."
OBLIVION.
