Sir,— l notice frojn the Herald that the j supporters of the liquor traffic have, in their' extremity, taken to quoting the words of the lev? ecclesiastics who have not yet joined their brethren in the great temperjance movement. Kindly allow me to reLturn the compliment by quoting the opinions of Ingersoll on the liquor traffic. The .late famous, agnostic philosopher and orator 1 delivered- Ithe following eloquent esposition of the evil effects of the liquor traffic ; — "I am aware there is a prejudice against any man -engaged in the rquor' business. j I believe from the time it issues from the coiled and poisonous worm >n the distillery until -it»empties into the hell of .dishonour, crime and death, that alcohol is demoralising to everybody that touches it, from its source to where it ends. I 3o not believe that anybody can contemplate the subject without being prejudiced against the crime. All -we have to do is to' think of the wrecks on eith'er side of the stream of death, of j the suicides, of the insanity, of the poverty, I pauperism, and destruction coming from alcohoC ; at the little children tugging at ! the skirts of weeping, despairing, starving j mothers ■begging for bread ; of the men of genius it h'as wrecked ; of she men «tray;^ling with imaginary serpents produced by this develish thing j arid when we think of the gaols and almshouses, of the a-iylums, - of the prisons, and of the scaffold on, either 1 bank.
