AT TRIBUTING EVIL MOTIVES.
■ To 'i'he Jidit) Sir, — I am sorry to see that some of the •supporters of both sides in the Electoral contest are emp.oying the vile weapon of attributing svil motives. One instance is that, where a correspondent insinuates — he dare not boldly affirm— that Mr Morton Jones's mistake in omitting the Okoi.i Polling Booth was made intentionally— with the object of inconveniencing some of Mr Carbon's supporters. Mr Carson is too much of a gentleman to say or think anything of the sort himself, -ami I am sura wou.cl rather be without the help of such as could lower thsmselves to say or think so. It may be a little comfort to sueU tolJcs to hear that, owing to a somewhat similar mistake, the Polling $ooth in tha Upper Wangachu Vr/ley has been omitted. As most of those who would have voted there are supporters of Mr H«mngton, any votes he may thus ioo^c will übouf counterbalance any loss by Mr Carson at Okoia. j Poihaps I may be allowed to mention that 1 1 am a !oVer of the day's pay as a Deputy Returning Officer at the rmltted booth, although I believe lain the only D.R.O. | in the neighbourhood known ia favour Mr Remington. All four of the candidates for the Wanganui and Pa tea. Districts, Mr Carson and Mr Willis, Mr Hutchison and Mr | Remington, are my personal friends, and I resent the slanderous attacks- upon tl.i.^R who differ from me in politics as much aa similar attacks on those with v-hom I politically agree. Spinoza writes: — "Men resent being treated as criminals r'or things which they deem true." Bulks *ays : — "I take toleration to be part of leJigion. Robertson, of Brighton, speaks to ffife following effect : —"It vill be of very little consequence a few years hence (whether the one candidate or -.he- other is elected) "bat it wilt be of ihe greatest consequence to all eternity" ('-vunther we act honestly and charitably iaaiie election.) t cannot find the passage at the moment, so quote from memory. The candidates are conducting the election in* a 'manly and gentlemanly style. Let us all trv to do th* same.— l am, etc., , : t GEORGE FRED. ALLEN, Chairman of "Mr Remington's Mangnino&tt Meetings. P.S. — On rending my letter through I see that I had overlooked tint a Mr Murphy is also a, candidate for Wanganui. (We are fully in accord with Mr Allan's sentiments. We regret that the vile weapon of falsehood and misrepresentation £ too freely used, as instance i be oft repeate.l falsehoods which Mr Carson ic caFed upon to -refute in every contest. So far aa the omission, of Ihe Okoi* Polling-Booth ia concerned, although we cannot excuse the. mistake of the Returning Officer, we do not think for a moment that the omissionwas, intentional, or that it was done with the object 'of injuring Mr Carson, to whom the people of Okoia have algvays bsenloyal and true. — Ed. Chronicle.) .
