N.S.W. POLITICS.

(By Electbic Telegram— CorYKiuirr.) APPOINTMENTS TO THE COUNCIL. (Pkb Peess Association.) Received April 9, 4,35 p.m. SYDNEY, April 9. The following twelve have been gazetted to the Legislative Council : — Chirks, who resigned in favour of Barton ; Gould, exiMinistei" of Justice ; Millen, who was defeated for the Bourke seat ; Hawken, Colonel ilolborrow, and Greene, ex-Parliamen-tarians ; Samuel McCaughey, wool king ; Jones, wool merchant; Wilson, Luizacs, Herpher, and Estell, officials of the various trades organisations in the colony. Premier Rcid, speaking at a banquet at Belmont last night, announced that the revenue for nine months exceeded the corresponding peiiod by over -t/200,000. The railways also showed an increase of fully £190,000 for the same period. He said it waa notorious that the Council had paralysed the Government over the Federal amendments. He did not care to take the extreme course of swamping the Chamber before he pursued a medium course. It had been said he had made a mistake in selecting men connected with the working classes, but it was time working men had a chance of making their voices "felt in the Council. At present there were members cf the Council who could not be touched except ill one place— the pocket, and they had been tootli and nail against the Government because of the land und income taxation. He hoped a wiser counsel would prevail, and that the Council would let the Federal Bill go untrammelled to the electors.
