The following report was presented by Mr Hylton, the Custodian, to the Library Directora at thoir meeting on Friday night: . — " I have to report that the number of subscribers remains about the same. SubBoriptiona aro not paid so promptly as they Bbould be, in consequence ot whioh it has been found necessary to obtain an overdraft; interest on overdralt of course means so much less to spend on books. I do not think subscribers take sufficient notice ol this, Tho annual case of books arrived last month. The books appear to givo very general satisfaction. The replaced books ara very much in demand ; much yet remains to be dono in replacing worn books. More shelving is urgently requited, I do not think the advantages of the Library ore sufficiently known, a little judicious advertising might, I think, do gool. Noxt year the Library will enter upon its twenty-Srst year; something should, I think, bo done in the matter of providing an endowment fund to commemorate the occasion ; the present income is totally inadequate to Bupply the needs of a town tho size of Wanganui. Mr Dymock has presented the Library with a set of George Eliot's novels; The lighting ot the library is vory inferior, tho quality of the gas supplied is, I think, the chlol cause.
