WOODS FOR STREET PAVING.
The Department of Industries and Commerce is issuing a circular to snwtnillera throughout the Colony on tho aubjtct of the exceptional demand at Home for woods suitable for streetpaving. It sot 9 forth the action which the Government have determined to take in the mutter, and ia accompanied by a reprint of the information receutly given in the New Zealand Times, an well bb copieß of the Agent-General's reports: —(I) On the various woods required for caniago-bnildiriß ; (2) on the various woods applicable for street- paving and cabinet-making; (3) ou tho sizo tho timber should be cut, and accuracy in cutting. The secrotary of tho department, Mr A'- M. Smith, points out that the woods specially recommended nre ritnu, red birch, matai, kauri and silver piuo ; and and he requested from eaoh person addressed a statement ao to whether he is in a portion to ship either of these in any considerable quantity, and, if so, nt what par 100 ft supeificial, f.o.b, at the nearest port (mentioning port in reply). The timber must be of the best quality, sound, straight, and straightgrained i Bawn true and die square, and free from knots, Ehakep, bark-seams, wavy-edges, sap-wood and other defects, The" timber to be cut in the following dimensions : Lengths, 10ft, 12ft, and 14 feet, in equal proportions; and to bo 9'.n by 3in section ' The intentions of the Government are thus stated :—•' The Government will be prepared to take direct from tha tawmillers, and make arrangements for the {shipment of '100,000 ft of either of the woods above-mentioned from each provincial distriot where sawmills exist, thi r desire being that a fair apportionment should "be obtained from the various mills in each district. In a- king you to state your price por 100 ft f.o.b. at tho port of thipment, the Government wish you to understand that they are acting in this matter aole'y with a view to extending the timber trade, and thereby doing good to the community, and thej therefore hope no ezwssive price will be named, the object being to ascsrtair whether a profitable business can b< established. The Government hope tlx sawraillers will co-operate with them ir their efforts to make this trill shipment a reliable guide as to what it is possibh to do with our timber. The Government expert at Home will be ordered to taki charge of tho shipment and conduct tin salen in England ; and, on the results o the 6ales coming to hand, due publicit; will be given thorn in the interests of 111 sawrail.'ers "-N.Z.
