"THERE'S MANY A SLIP." & C.
A MARRIAGE FIASCO. (Per Pbebb Association,) Wellington, March 29, At St. Peter's Church this afternoon a large party bad assembled to witness tho uniou of two young people pretty well known in the city. The marriage service was being conducted by the Rev. W. C. Wat9rß, and all went v ell until the clergy, man asked the lady whether she would : take the man at her side as her wedded husband, " To have and to hold," &c, &c. To tho surprise of all present, the brideelect briefly, hut distinctly, replied "No." Thinking that there must be some misunderstanding, Mr Waters went acrain over the previous few sentences of tl*e service. Again came the refusal, short and sharp. The lady's father nudged ber and urged " But you must say * I will,' " but she was determined. " No," was her reply, *' 1 wont ; I wont have him." Thereupon, at the suggestion of tho lady's father, the whole party retired to the vestry where a short consultation was held, the result being that Mr Waters had to advanco to the altar rails and announce that owing to the indisposition of the bride-elect the marriage had to bo postponed for the present.
