THE LICENSING POLLS.
[Per United Press Association.] Thames, March 29. The Returning officer to-day declared tho Thames Licensing Election void as he rules that 411 informal votes cannot be included. Official figures are :—Continuance of publicans' licenses, 324; reduction, 21 ; no licenses, 718 ; informal, 411. Thore wore 3,066 voters on the roll. Temperance people intend teating tho question in the Supreme Court. Dunedin, March 29. It is rumoured that an attempt will be made to upset tbe recent licensing election and local option poll on technical grounds. The Waikouaiti local option poll is void, the Returning Officer, under legal advice, excluding ; informal votes, which, if included, would mako the poll effective, in which case prohibition would have been carriod. The Wakatipu local option poll is in favour of existing licenses. Tho nurabor of men employed on tho various Government co-operative works at tho ond of February was 2,062, divided as follows:— Labourers : Survey Dopartment— Wellington District, 420 ; Auckland District, 81 ; Taranaki District, 187 ; Canterbury District, 156 ; Otago District, 70 ; Southland District, 1_'~ ; Peniborton impropemontfiirm, Wellington, 15; Stato farm, Lovin (il furailios also on farm ), 26, Public Works Dopartment—Karao-Ilikii-ningi Railway, --; Pueroa-Te Aroha Railway, .'"0 ; North Island Main Trunk Railway (north end), 72; ditto south mid, l'"3; Ekotahuna- Woodville Railway, 221; Groymouth-Hokitika Railway, 47 ; Cjitlui's Rivor Railway, 32; Seaward iiiiah Railway, 47 ; Otago Contral Railway, -.'(Hi ; public buildings, C ; Point Ualswell Road, 3_ ; Groat South Road, 10; lJlenhcim - Awatoro Railway, 14; road to Blackball, S3— a total of 1,978 labourers. Eighty four artissans wero omployed— 3 at the Levin Stato Farm, and the rest divided ns follows :— KamoHikurangi, 4 ; Paeroa-To Aroha, 5 ; North Island Mam Trunk (north ond), 5; south end, 17; Catlin's River, 1; Seaward Bush, 14 ; Otago Central 20 ; public buildings, 16. A reduction of onefourth of this number is vow being made.
