The substitution of the metal nib for tho old-fashioned goose-quill appears to have awakened in the late Cardinal .Newman something more than a. mere sentimental regret. In a letter to the late Sergeant Bellasiß in 1871, printed in Mr Edward Bellasis's memorials of his father just published by Messrs Burns and Oateß, the Cardinal says ;— " I have a pen which writes so badly that it reacts upon my composition and my spelling. How odd this is : but it is true. I think best when I write. I cannot in the same way think while I speak. Some men are brilliant in conversation, others in public speaking. But then, if it is a bad pcn — a stoel pen ? That'is my case just now, and thus I find mybrain yon't work; mtich as I wish it. Therefore you must take' pity on me, and 6end me, a !: otter ans^Yor, than I a question."
