Tho benevolent trustees bave endorsed the resolutiou by the Cbristchurch Charitable Aid Board on the question of improving Charitable Aid Legislation. The benevolent trustees think the time bas arrived when a cancer ward should bo established in Wellington. There is a cancer case in the Benevolent Homo at the present time, but for the sake of other inmatos it is necessary to separate such cases, and doctors refuse to grant certificate for admission to the Hospital. Tho question, therefore, arises, what is to become ot the man ? The niattter will probably bo considered at the next meeting ofjthe Hospital Board. . Auckland, November 8. An accident of a most distressing character, which will probably end fatally, occurred at Onehunga last night. Maggie Coutts, a daughter of the engineer of the Onehunga Woollen Mills, started for a little canter, when the horse became unmanageable and dashed away at a gallop, Miss Coutts began to lose her seat, and as she was falling off the horse and rider swept past a telegraph post. The girl struck the post with terrific force, and nearly the whole of her face was cut away as with a knife. The base of the brain was fractured, the nose almost entirely severed from the face, the mouth was fearfully lacerated, and one eye 'was completely destroyed. Maggie Coutts is only 18 years of ago, and was of an unusually bright and spirited temperament. Later. Further do/.ails of the boats disaster at Eotorua show that nine men were drowned and thai, all the bodies were recovered but one. They were returning from the burying of an old chief at Omnhou and most of the occupants (18 men und two women) are alleged to have been int 'xioatad. Mr Malf rox, Chairman of the Town .Board, wired the Native Minister for pecuniary help. The following are the names of those drowned : — Kepa Hikairo, Ngairu, sen"-., Tutsli, Aeoinaiai, Totem, Pokino, Ngarini, junr., Tuhiti, and Kaigi Turei (Gilbert Steward). Pokino's body has not yel been found. At the Board of Education meeting a recjUßst from f?t. Andrew's College, to be included in the list of schools at which the Board's scholarships are tenable, was refused. The Board ijlso decided that in future they could not send any further scholarships to private schools. Napjeb, November 8. The result of the inquiry into the grounding of the s.s. Star of England at Gape Saunders, was that the Court found it was due to tho foggy weather, and set currents towards the coast to the north of Otago harbour ; hlbo the uncertainty as to the movements of tho Mararoa which helped Capt. Simpson, having altered the course of the Star of England through fear of a possible collision. The Court, however, thought that had lead been sounded as a precautionary measure it might have given warning of nearness of land, and for that omission they ordorod him to pay the costs of inquiry.
