EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Education Board was resumed yesterday. Present—Messrs Carson (chairman.), Sanson, Bridge, Baker, Pry, Notman, Beckett, Q-. Hurley, and Rev. J. Ross. The business of the Board was opened by Mr Sanson, who proposed that the number of scholars required to be guaranteed by tho regulations before the opening of any school by the Board should be reduced from 25 to 20. Rata — A communication from the ' Chairman of the Committee was read,- • asking for assistance in the erection -of a shelter shed and side gate, for which " purposes it was resolved to contribute ■ pound fot, pound up to .£5: Hawera. — Attention was called to the state of the flooring of the saddle-shed j it was proposed to -lay down a' rough ■ flooring of boards, and a contribution was a3ked from the Board. Mr Hurley was desired to report upon the matter. Manaia. — An application was received. * from the pupil teacher who desired assistance similar^ to that rendered in cases : where teachers are obliged to reside away from home, but as in this instance the teacher was not actually living away from her parents, the Board had no power • to make the grant. Cheltenham and Kimbolton Road. — It was resolved to separate the districts and to advertise a meeting of householders to elect committees. CastiiEowff. — An applicafion was - made for a school in the neighbourhood, and a list of families residing in it was ; read. After some discussion it was decided to ask the Chairman and Mr Notman to mak6 inquiries, and report at the first meeting of the Board. Awahubi. — It waß resolved that an additional room be erected, and the matter was referred to the architect and inspector. Poxton.— Mr W. P. Stansell, junior assistant, applied for an extension of his leave of absence for,another three monthß by reason of his continued illness. The leave was granted, but the Board did not feel themselves able to continue the teacher's salary during the extended ' period. ' -s~ Abamoho. — The request of the committee that the school buildings should be repainted was acceded to, on the motion of the Chairman. JRunteeville. — A communication was received with regard to falling bush on - the proposed school site, in which it was requested that representatives of the Board should visit the spot with the idea of finally deciding upon it for the erection of a school, — It was proposed and carried that Mr Bridge should visit the place and report at the next meeting. Wanganui. School of Design. — The Chairman read a letter from the Minister "' for Education to the effect that the Government did not see their way to make the grant of .£SOO desired by the Board. — On the Chairman's motion a committee wsa appointed, consisting of Messrs Bridge, Baker, Notman, and the mover, to report on the practicability of the Board ' establishing a School of Design. ■ ' Motttoa. — An application from the Committee, asking that the shingle roof '"'. „ should be replaced by corrugated iron, "7 was referred to the Executive. Otakeho.— A telegram having been read to the effect that the teacher had bean incapacitated by an accident, a reply was sent that, the Board weie unable to find a substitute for a week, and that consequently the school would ne&d to be closed for that period. Foxton. — Another telegram, asking for assistance during the absence of Mr Stansell, was referred to the Executive. Tavkorea.— lt was decided to write to Mr Scott to ask him if he were willing to apply for a re-lease of two acres of land, offered by him for school site, so that -the Board might erect a school thereon. Rowan Road.— There was some discussion as to the most desirable size of the plot to be set aside for a school site, and ultimately it was lef b with Mr Hurley to see the owner of the land. In Committee. — At this stage" the Board went into Committee on the re* port of the Inspector on pupil teachers. Mr Blair's report on drawing was also brought forward and read, as well as the report on needlework. G-LErf Nevis. — It was moved by Mr ' Baker, seconded by Jffir Sauson, and carried, That no capitation should be paid to the Glen Nevis Aided School this quarter, in consequence of a correct quarterly return not having been sent in, Kabebe. — Mr Sanson then reported upon the improvements necessary to the Karere residence, and it was resolved -i to sanction the necessary work, and that the committee should be authorised to advertise for tenders therefor, which were to be submitted to Mr Sanson. — It was further resolved, That the architect ■ should call for tenders for an additional class room to accommodate 40 children. Notice of Motion. — Mr Baker gave notice of motion, That the Board take into consideration the question of increasing the salary of the junior clerk. The Board then adjourned.
